Set contrast at 100%. Contrast and brightness controls are usually located on the monitor itself.

First set brightness high, then adjust until the grey box (below, centered in the black box) disappears.

Set your color depth as high as it will go. For Windows, set to "True Color." For Macintosh, set to "Millions of Colors."
