Buying an Office Chair - Part 1
GENERAL OFFICE ERGONOMICS "Improving your safety and productivity while increasing your comfort" |
| Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the leading workplace illness in the United States costing employers between $25 and $50 billion each year. While non-office workplace situations remain the leading source of workplace related MSDs, office environments also contain several risk factors. |

|
| MSDs are generally caused by exceeding the capabilities of the soft tissues either through too much force, too frequent movements, inadequate rest, or awkward postures while performing motions. |
| MSDs are generally preventable. While there are genetic susceptibilities to certain MSDs, most MSDs have root causes in a combination of lifestyle, working conditions, and non-work activities of daily life including hobbies, sports, and at-home computer usage. Successfully preventing MSDs requires intervening into each of these areas. |
| By definition, a musculoskeletal disorder is an illness of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, peripheral nerves, joints, cartilage (including intervertebral discs), bones and/or supporting blood vessels in either the upper or lower extremities, or back, which is associated with musculoskeletal disorder workplace risk factors and which is not the result of acute or instantaneous events (e.g., slips or falls). |
| Risk factors are those conditions about the workplace environment and the task you perform that make you more susceptible to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Go to Risk Factors to learn more about some of the risk factors specific to office environments. |
